Mascha Gugganig

I am a socio-cultural anthropologist and scholar in science & technology studies (STS) and environmental humanities. I broadly research, teach, publish, curate, and make research-art on the nexus of human - nature - technoscience. I am a lecturer and researcher (akademische Rätin), co-founder and co-director of the Center for Life Sciences and Society at the Faculty of Biology, and an affiliate researcher and habilitation candidate at the Rachel Carson Center, both at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU).

Broadly, my work is concerned with (1) knowledge production and various forms of farming expertise in the context of controversial (digital, bio-, indoor farming) technologies to forster a more sustainable, biodiverse agriculture; (2) public engagement with research, science and technology in public spaces and museums; and (3) collaborative, participatory research with partners in practical fields (e.g. farmers), often through arts-based, design methods and multimodal ethnography.

More specifically, I ask how in a world shaped by technoscientific insights and instruments different communities - be it (Indigenous) youth or teachers, farmers, activists or citizens, scientists, engineers, or politicians - engage with nature in the context of food production. While some may see cutting-edge technologies as 'the' solution for pressing environmental issues, others see the need to support practice-based solutions and social innovation. As critical and applied researcher, I research diverse epistemologies and practices to highlight crucial differences but also similarities, not least to create platforms for engagement.

Relatedly, I am also concerned with power dynamics and social justice issues to highlight how certain visions of a better world, a more 'sustainable' agricultural system, or an 'educated public' often overshadow others that are not in the limelight of media, political or academic attention.

In my work, I further develop, practice and teach multimodal, visual and arts-based methods (exhibitions, video, photography), organize and collaborate on students' and researchers’ works in arts spaces (museums, galleries, conferences), publishing results on websites and various academic publications.
